EU News

Pesticide residues in food: risk to consumers remains low
EFSA published on 11 April 2017 the latest report on monitoring pesticide residues in foods produced or imported in Europe. The report points out that more than 97% of 84341 of food samples analysed in the EU in 2015 fall within the limits set by law, with more than 53% of such samples even without quantifiable residues. The figures are in line with those recorded in 2014. The legal limits have been exceeded in 5.6% of samples from non-EU countries, down from 6.5% in 2014. For products from EU and EEA countries, the law limits have been exceeded in 1.7% of the sample, with a slight increase compared to the previous year (from 1.6%). The report is very reassuring and indicates a proper use plant protection products as a whole. Food consumed in the European Union continues to be largely devoid of pesticide residues or contain residues falling within the limits of the law. It is interesting to know that even organic foods, 99.3%, have been found to be free from residues or with residues within the law limits.
